My Top 3 Priorities

  • More community and parent engagement, especially regarding District priorities, including Measure J spending.
  • Continuing to foster an administrative culture of transparency and objectivity where we invite (not shy away from) challenges
  • Treat parents and students as our "customers" -- encourage a positive and constructive school culture where we strive to say "yes!"

Board of Trustees, Ojai Unified School District — Elected position (2014–current)

University of Michigan Juris Doctor, Law (1987)
University of California, Berkeley Bachelor of Arts, Economics (1984)

I am an encumbent, having served on the Ojai Uniifed School District Board of Trustees since 2014.  I am also a volunteer in our community.  I have coached soccer and basketball and am a soccer referee.  I am the Mock Trial coach of Nordhoff High School.  I am a plaintiffs' lawyer, specializing in class action litigation.  I have argued twice in the California Supreme Court, winning both times. Most recently, I successfully argued the case Lee v. Dynamex which has been called "monumental" and "a blockbuster."  In that case, the California Supreme Court agreed with my position and established new protections for employees in California by making it harder for employers to classify workers as independent contractors who work without benefits or basic protections.  I have three children, all of whom attend Ojai's public schools.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

As a School Board Member, I have been a constant advocate of full transparency (even when we must face hard facts).  I believe that only by fully "owning" the facts and realities of our circumstances can we find the best path forward.  I am a strong believer in a positive and constructive school culture -- our parents and students are our customers and we are competing for their patronage.  I believe that our public schools are truly the front line of our constitutional republic --- that the promise of a free, high quality education must be fulfilled if America is to fulfill its unique promise.  I believe diversity in all respects is our strength.  I believe in robust debate and am loath to censor those with whom I disagree.  I am hold free speech as perhaps our greatest freedom.
